Can Laser Treatments Support Healthier Skin Beyond Cosmetic Results?

Yet emerging dermatology research suggests that certain laser technologies may influence more than the skin’s appearance. By encouraging controlled renewal within sun-damaged skin, some fractional laser treatments may also support healthier tissue over time.

What Researchers Are Learning About Fractional Lasers

Newer non-ablative fractional lasers work differently. Rather than removing the entire surface, they create microscopic columns of controlled thermal energy while leaving surrounding tissue intact. Dermatologists have studied wavelengths including 1927 nm, which is often used for superficial photodamage and pigmentation, and 1550 nm, which reaches more deeply into the dermis to stimulate remodeling. What the Skin-Cancer Research Found

A Massachusetts General Hospital study examined patients who had previously been treated for facial keratinocyte carcinoma, a category that includes basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.

Among the patients studied, 20.9% of those who received non-ablative fractional laser treatment developed another facial keratinocyte carcinoma during an average follow-up period of more than six years. By comparison, 40.4% of untreated patients developed another carcinoma. After accounting for age, sex, and skin type, the untreated group was reported to be 2.65 times more likely to develop a subsequent facial cancer. (Massachusetts General Hospital)

Those findings are encouraging, but they require context. The study involved a relatively small group of individuals who already had a history of facial skin cancer. It was not proof that all cosmetic lasers prevent cancer, nor did it establish that every laser device, treatment protocol, or patient would experience the same benefit.
